Sardinia - Geography:

Sardinia lays in the center of the Mediterranean sea, between Corsica and Tunisia. Considering all its satellite small isles its surface is of 24.090 square km, and this makes Sardinia be the second Italian isle after Sicilia. The max distance from east (Capo dell'Argentiera) to west (Capo Comino) is 145 km, while from north (Capo Falcone) to south (Capo Teulada) is 270 km Sardinia has four provinces, Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano. Cagliari - on the southern coast - is the Sardinian regional administrative centre. The global perimeter of the Sardinian coast reaches 1897 km. Sardinia is a hill country for 67,9%, mountainous for its 13,6% and flat for 18,5%. The eastern side of Sardinia is rich in mountain especially in Gallura with its big granite blocks, while the western side is definitely more heterogeneous with basalt and trachyte plateau mainly in the Sulcis-Iglesiente area rich in minerals which was once full of large mines. Between the Cagliari and the Oristano gulfs spreads the Campidanese plain. The sole great mountain of Sardinia is Gennargentu where the highest peak with its 1834 mt height dominates the whole Sardinia. The Mediterranean climate with its long and very warm summers and short and mild winters attracts tourists all over the year. Sardinia has torrential rivers while its lakes are almost always artificial except the Bāratz lake in the Nurra area but the true beauty of Sardinia is its coast with sandy or rocky bays and beaches and the multicolored depth of its crystal-clear sea evidencing how nature is here still intact.

Sardinia - Weather:

The geographical position of the Sardinia Isle favors the Sardinian microclimate. In fact, being next to the Tropic of Cancer, Sardinia is delighted by a maritime climate that is warm-temperate influenced by the sea. The coasts are mainly touched by this influence, while reaching the hills and mountains the altitude lowers the grades. Average temperature during the year flows between 14 and 20. The coldest month is January while the warmest is August along the coast and July in the inland. During summertime average temperature is 30° but can easily reach 40° in some areas. The tourism peak happens during summertime especially in the days of the Feast of the Assumption. July and September are also perfect for a holiday: still warm and less crowded! Spring time with its average temperature is 14°C is for sure the best time for traveling in Sardinia. Average temperature in wintertime does not go below 8°C in the coast areas while in the inland on the hills and mountain it is may go below zero °C and on Gennargentu and in the nearby zones as Bruncu Spina and Punta la Marmora you can easily find snow. The Fonni village has the sole ski area of the whole Sardinia! Rain is frequent in late autumn and spring time but poor and stormy and bringing damages to cultivations most of the times. June is the driest month and usually with cloudless bright sky.

Sardinia - Winds:

Sardinia is constantly exposed to winds especially to north-.west wind. The Eastern coast is less windy being more protected.

Minstral - the northwest wind, blows frequently especially in winter time.

Scirocco - the southeast warm and dry wind, comes from the African deserts and brings warm humid air.

Levante - the eastern wind brings Sardinia fresh and humid air.

Tramontana - the northern wind, is always rather chilly.

Grecale - the northeast wind, is fresh both in summer and in winter.

Ponente - the Western wind, always present in winter brings cold breezy air.
